Last sunset of 2016 in Alpine, TX. 6:04 PM
- from Alyce Santoro
I was outside capturing the sun setting - with bell, of course! - on the last day of 2016! I can't tell you how many times I THOUGHT of ringing the bell at sunrise or sunset, or didn't get satisfactory documentation!! It was my MISSION not to let 2016 slip by without a single documented ringing...alas, I am without good wi-if at the moment and uploading the evidence will have to wait until tomorrow!
Each New Year's Eve, I've recommitted to the daily observation of the sunrise and sunset. The original premise- that it is possible to affirm our connection to one another and to the natural world through participation in a shared, elemental experience hasn't changed. As each new year dawns, I like to come up with a different way to invite others to join the project. 2016 is a leap year, as was 2008 when the project began. It seems mildly auspicious and a good excuse to propose something major.

December 1, 2016. Sunset 4:51 PM

Leaving Fred. Walking down the hallway with the little Santa Light on the floor and the rush hour traffic at the end of the hall outside the door, there was just something about it. The light. The stillness. A sense of suspension.

Far far north
October 28, 2016. Sunset 4:29 PM
Bollstabruk, Sweden
Thanks for lovely brighter mornings! Amazing! Gives hope!
Here is a photo of the sun recently, friday the 28th october from the northern swedish region I am living in, from a small village called Bollstabruk.
It is a sunset, already around 4pm (before the wintertime change the former weekend).
Sunsets is happening at same time as sunrises, and I feel so connected with all of you from all different places, through the sun! Let the sun shine on us, in new brighter mornings and brighter days!
We are listening and watching the sun together!

a few words about August so far
The following 2 offerings reveal some basic things about the dailybell project that either remind me of why I started doing it in the first place or to illustrate something simple but unexpected that I have come to appreciate.
The first was the significance of cycles and of our personal and communal connections to them—the small daily ones, anniversaries, big cycles of living and dying. My friend Ian reminded me that August 11th was his mother’s birthday. She would have been over 100 had she still been living and there aren’t that many people around these days who would remember her special day. So Happy Birthday Henny! We love you and still enjoy sitting in your old blue chair.
The circumstances of the sunrise by the Williamsburg Bridge at 5:53AM on 8/1 is a fairy common (and potentially frustrating) occurrence and has inspired this month’s Calendar Challenge. How often does anyone actually get to see the sun as it rises or sets? Especially from home. There are usually buildings, trees or something blocking the view of the horizon.
Best wishes as we gather momentum rolling into Autumn--

Buffalo, NY
It's always very fun and challenging to try and figure out where you are and what time it is on the earth below from the middle of nowhere in the sky. I look at the map on the seat back video and then lookup the sunset/rise time over the nearest city. This time it looked like Buffalo, NY at 8:58.

Sparkly Soltice Sunset Celebration
June 21, 2016
Sunset 8:34 PM.
Oakland, CA. Chapel of the Chimes.
Even though this year’s annual Garden of Memory event (thank you Sarah Cahill!) to celebrate the summer Solstice fell on the day after the Solstice (leap year disruption?), the bell ringing at sunset was a sparkly, glorious moment. Hundred’s of bells added to the already swirling soundscape that included the Cardew Choir in the final hour of their 4-hour performance of Pauline Oliveros’ Heart Chant.
Celestial FYI— While the sunrise has bottomed out at its earliest time (for this location), it will turn around and start squeezing the light from the day on Monday (6/27). Good news, however, is that the sun will continue to remain at it’s latest for another week- so we still have the sense of long days for a while longer.

Lady or the Tiger?
Sunrise 5:26 AM June 6, 2016.
Adriatic Sea. Vasto Marina, Italy.
This peaceful early morning moment was sandwiched between two slices of mild excitement. In order to see the sun over the Adriatic Sea, I had to jump over a little wall outside the bedroom window and walk across the roof. Once I had finished watching the sunrise, I turned around to return to my room and discovered that all of the rooms looked alike.
So I made my best guess and climbed over what I thought was my little wall and then wondered why the door to the bedroom was closed. It wasn’t until I saw a pair of legs and some red boxer shorts approach the window from the other side that I realized that this was not my room- not my window- not my balcony and hopped over the wall as fast as I could.
My apologies to the man I disturbed this morning. Hopefully a day in paradise will heal all.

You'd think traveling at 750 miles per hour would feel faster than this... Sunset at La Esquina Gallery in Kansas City, MO during a recent presentation and performance. At this latitude it takes a little more than 2 minutes from the time the bottom of the sun touches the horizon until it completely disappears.
